'Tis the season of distress?

So I know I’ve been MIA for literally months, but I was just having too much fun this summer to actually sit down and write about it! But then it got me thinking...I’ve got myself into a literary profession which involves primarily writing. Well, unless of course some TV station decides to hire my unknown reporting talent; I'm still looking for it!

Anyways, the summer is over and the tree branches have replaced their leaves neatly with dusts of white. And with this joyous season comes, besides my birthday of course, a highly agonizing end of term where we post-secondary students struggle to begin studying for exams after just barely meeting deadlines of final essays and projects. But in all honesty, I am absolutely amazed at how fast this semester has flown by! I'm just days away from being stress-free for a month.

It's a wonderful feeling actually. I am content in just knowing that my so-called “hard work” will pay off in only a matter of time. That is, until the night of my first exam when I will be jolted with a sense of shock, like the feeling I assume one gets when being struck by lightning. I can almost guarantee that the feeling has got to be similar if not the same. Nonetheless, until the night before my exam, I will sit under a tree while it rains, knowing the possible outcome of my carelessness. But it's all good! Though I must add, it’s probably better to be struck by lightning because at least it generally happens once in a lifetime. We students on the other hand, experience this shock multiple times during the year.

Now excuse my rant on the issue, but I’m sure all you nerds can relate to this distress. You know, that feeling you get while sitting on the bus, cramming your way towards your destiny, hoping that you were actually the lady sitting on the right trying to console her uncontrollably crying baby? Yeah, that’s right! Our levels of stress in the moment take our imagination to those extreme heights. And then our palms get sweaty and we’re biting away at those nails it took us three months to grow so nicely. Then two hours later, when the professor yells “time’s up,” we look at our hands and think, “why?” and quickly go on to asking the person sitting next to us what they answered for question 52. As if their answer could possibly make a difference now, but we just gotta know! And as we relieve ourselves of one shock, we are struck once more. “One down, three more to go...”

If it’s any consolation my fellow inmates of academic torture, there are only two more weeks left until the holidays! And just like every other year since we entered high school, we will make it through this period of misery and emerge victorious! Wishing you all the very best with your upcoming exams! May you all pass with flying colours!

'Rahat hi Rahat'

Bollywood music sensation, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was here in Toronto on April 30, performing live at Roy Thompson Hall and I was there to witness the magic. As the pride of his deceased uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rahat paid tribute to his 'guru' by performing some of Nusrat's old hit songs at his sold-out performance, "Rahat hi Rahat," last month. The crowd went wild as Rahat's voice reached unimaginable heights touching the hearts and souls of all present in the audience. Rahat's show catered to all his audiences. Along with reciting some remarkable qawalli's, he hyped up the audience with singing his most famous bollywood movie songs. It was an overall hair-raising experience!

Let the holidays begin!

It's been just over a week since I completed my first year at Ryerson! The beginning of the four-month-long holidays has just begun and the excitement level is getting high! It has been quite a progressive week, I must say. I have checked quite a few things off my to-do list including, giving my room a belated spring cleaning. After removing all unnecessary junk from my closet, including my winter attire, I have left it all to sit in a corner on my bedroom floor in hopes that it may magically walk itself to sit in an empty corner of my basement. It's been three days and let me tell you: no such magic has occured!

Along with completing chores, I have made time for my friends and family. Friday night, a few of my friends and I decided to go out for dinner at a halal pizza and wings place; a night out that was long overdue! We caught up on old times and discussed our plans for the future. It's kind of amazing how our mindsets have changed in less than a year since we completed high school. After dinner, we let our somewhat "crazy" sides kick in and went to smoke some sheesha at Alexandria's, which was just next door to Pizzaland, where we had dinner. After cracking up many jokes and being slightly immature making fun of everyone that walked in to the sheesha bar, we left for a quick coffee and made our way home. A great night with great company!

Saturday, I left for buffalo at 7 a.m. with my mom, aunt and little cousin. It was shopping time! We reached our destination at approximately 12 p.m. and began our shopping spree right away. Though I wasn't so lucky in getting the things I wanted, I still managed to spend almost $250. Now that I think about it, what did I buy? Just three tops, four t-shirts, three pairs of pants and two pairs of sandals and a few bathroom accessories. Did I get good bargain? I'm confused! Nevertheless, I am still satisfied with my purchases!

This next week brings excitement too! Water aerobics, an indian concert and breakfast with my whole family. Let the holidays begin!

So, what's the hype?

As I am currently attempting to complete my first year in Journalism at Ryerson University, I have met many people on my journey thus far that have made this road a smooth and pleasant one for me. These also-aspiring journalists, my fellow classmates, have explained to me the importance of exercising my writing skills as I continue to make my way through these next few brutal years of university. So what am I supposed to write about? The news? School? Life? Well, apparently, I was told...anything! And hence, here I am, writing away, hardly caring about what I say or how I say it! So, what's the hype? Well, I am here to find out!
